Maxogen For Maximum Performance
Be All the Man You Can Be
To reclaim your peak sexual performance will require not only attention to your libido, but to your entire body and way of life.
Whatever your life goals may be, success in maintaining good physical and sexual fitness can only be achieved by following the multi-faceted program outlined below. Know that looking and feeling your very best should begin with a complete hormonal assessment.
You should also be prepared to eliminate or significantly reduce the lifestyle-related issues that are linked to male hormonal imbalances. This may mean improving your diet, modifying your exercise program, reducing stress and, if necessary, seeking qualified medical support.
A few, simple changes can dramatically improve the quality of your life and lead to:
You will feel better, look better, and perform better sexually with greater frequency with the Maxogen program.
Identify your symptoms
Are your testosterone levels low? Take the 10-point quiz below and find out.
If you answered "yes" to two or more of these ten questions, chances are your testosterone levels are less than optimal. How can you find out for sure?
Test your hormonal levels.
Hormonal testing can provide key insights into both the short and long-term status of your health. More specifically, hormonal testing offers a measurable assessment of any hormonal abnormalities that may be linked to aging, stress, or illness.
At some point in their lives, all men should obtain a personal hormone profile. Ideally, this assessment should be performed in the early twenties to establish a baseline for future hormonal measurement. But it’s never too late to establish a baseline, regardless of your age.
It is only through a comprehensive hormonal analysis of testosterone, DHT, DHEA, cortisol, and estrogen that a man’s respective ratios can be determined. Testosterone, DHT and DHEA levels should be in the high normal range. Levels of estrogen and cortisol should be in the low normal range.
Saliva testing offers a reliable and inexpensive way to assess the important male hormones. In addition to being less costly than laboratory blood tests, salivary hormone testing is more convenient and far more accurate when it comes to measuring bio-available testosterone.
Adopt a testosterone-enhancing diet.
You are what you eat! If you want to maximize your testosterone it is extremely important to follow these dietary guidelines:
Eat more vegetables: especially green leafy and cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, kale, swiss chard, brussels sprouts and cabbage. These vegetables contain ‘phytochemicals,’ which are enhance healthy hormone production and help the liver to metabolize and excrete excess estrogen.
Make sure you eat enough protein. In Latin, the word ‘protein’ literally means ‘above all else.’ Without adequate protein, you will not feed your muscles with the essential amino acids they need for growth, repair and optimum function.
Limit excessive carbohydrate intake, especially of simple sugars and starches (breads, cereals, pasta and potatoes). High carbohydrate intake can create a rapid raise in blood sugar, creating excess levels of insulin and cortisol—two hormones that work against testosterone, diminishing its production.
Forget low fat! It’s a little known fact that testosterone, and all other male hormones, are actually made from cholesterol. When fats become deficient in the diet, testosterone levels decline. Of course this doesn’t mean that a man’s diet should be a fatty free-for-all, there are good and bad fats.
Fats to be avoided include the trans-fats such as those found in margarine and other processed foods. Beneficial essential fats are those found in cold-water fish, walnuts, pumpkin seeds and flaxseed. These fats are a dietary necessity and should be eaten on a regular, daily basis. They are essential for normal testosterone production.
Eat one hardboiled egg daily. Not only are small amounts of dietary cholesterol important for the formation of testosterone, eggs provide essential fatty acids necessary for maintaining healthy hormone balance.
Eat five smaller (instead of three larger), well-balanced meals each day. Smaller, more frequent meals will help maintain steady blood sugar levels and eliminate unnecessary stress hormone release. Don’t wait until you are famished to eat.
To insure getting five balanced meals daily, it is very useful to have one or two Power Drinks (see recipe below) and to have a supply of meal replacements bars (such as Balance Outdoor Bars or Cliff Boulder Bars) on hand as a mid-day or evening snack.
Power Drink Recipe
1 scoop whey protein and ½ scoop soy or egg white protein 4 oz organic unsweetened soymilk ¼ cup frozen strawberries or blueberries, small piece banana 1 tablespoon virgin olive or high heat canola.
OPTIONAL 1 scoop green food mix (we recommend Herbal Mix from www.lef.org) 1 teaspoon xylitol
Add ice and water to taste. Blend for even consistency.
Incorporate physical activity into your daily life.
Train harder for shorter periods of time.
High levels of testosterone are needed to insure muscle growth and repair. But both the lack of physical activity and excessive physical activity (overtraining) will result in decreased levels of testosterone.
Exercise effects testosterone directly by stimulating the pituitary gland and the testes. It also contributes to raising its levels by slowing down the normal breakdown of testosterone.
The duration, intensity and frequency of exercise will determine the amount of testosterone circulating in the body. Testosterone levels increase most with short intense bursts of activity (like those used for strength training). They decrease with prolonged endurance activities such as long-distance running, swimming or cycling.
During endurance training, testosterone is needed to maintain muscle. Frequent, extended training doesn’t allow for repair and recovery. Studies show that exercise will elevate testosterone for about forty-five minutes. After an hour, the effects become negative and levels begin to fall. Once they’re down, they can stay down—for as many as six days.
Take high-quality vitamin and mineral supplements.
To maximize the anabolic to catabolic hormone ratio with high levels of testosterone and DHT and low levels of estradiol, supplement your daily diet with the following vitamins, mineral, nutrients and essential fats. Take a multivitamin/mineral formula daily.
Key daily nutrients should include:
Additional nutrients to consider:
Prior to vigorous exercise: Take 400 IU Vitamin E and 3 grams Vitamin C to reduce free radical stress on the pituitary gland.
For elevated estrogen levels: Increase dose to 100mg Zinc and 4 grams Vitamin C, daily.
Take supplemental essential fats daily. When essential dietary fats are deficient, testosterone production is inhibited.
These include:
Refined and purified fish oil: 1 tablespoon daily.
High lignin flax oil and/or seeds: 1 tablespoon daily. These offer essential fatty acids and fiber, which promote healthy estrogen metabolism. This can be added to a power drink or to hot cereal.
Adopt a testosterone-enhancing lifestyle
Lose that extra body fat. Fat cells, especially in the abdominal region, produce aromatase, an enzyme which converts testosterone into estrogen.
Reduce your alcohol intake. Excessive drinking increases estrogen and inhibits testosterone production. Minimizing alcohol intake also improves liver function, your liver will be better able to remove estrogen from your body.
Stop taking any unnecessary medications. Many commonly-prescribed drugs effect liver function, testosterone conversion and estrogen metabolism. They include the NSAIDs (ibuprofen, acetaminophen and aspirin); the statin class of cholesterol-lowering drugs; some heart and blood pressure medications, and some anti-depressants.
Consult with your physician and ask if they can be eliminated for six months, so you can determine their potential effect on your hormone levels. Since many of these medications are used to treat symptoms of testosterone deficiency, you may find that you no longer need them once your hormone levels have been re-balanced and restored.
Get a full eight hours of sleep. Don’t underestimate the power of a good night's sleep. Studies have shown that most people are chronically sleep deprived. Nothing can take the place of adequate rest. If you are sleep deprived, your hormonal health will suffer. If you are not able to get enough rest regularly, consider an occasional power nap.
Take in at least one hour of sunlight daily, especially during winter. Testosterone raises and falls seasonally as sunlight controls its natural rhythm in the body. Sunlight is essential for optimum testosterone production.
Stress-proof your life! There is a strong correlation between mental outlook and physical wellness, and it is largely mediated by hormones. While the right kinds of stress can be hormonally beneficial, the wrong kinds can be devastating. Chronic emotional stress is a common cause of low testosterone. Not only does it interfere with testosterone function, muscle building and strength, it causes premature aging and contributes to the onset of cardiovascular disease.
Much of the stress in our lives comes from lack of direction or true purpose in our lives. To lessen emotional stress, determine your priorities and set some goals. Then create and follow a step-by-step plan to achieve them. Focus on what’s really important in your life and don’t let the small stuff distract you.
